Mental Health staff in the NHS Staff Survey scored 'We are always learning' as the lowest of all 9 domains*.
Whilst I know training budget’s are tight and resources are limited, I also know that investing in supporting the workforce is truly worthwhile.
Both in improving the quality and safety of care, and also improving morale and likely impacts on recruitment, retention and reputation.

About Me

Hi, I'm Liam. I've dedicated my career to supporting Children and Families, working in mental health and trauma services. This experience has given me deep insight into how to best support children and families facing complex challenges. I’ve also led services with management and Head of Service roles in CAMHS and Children's Mental Health Commissioning.

I love sharing knowledge — whether through training, supervision, or consultation. At the heart of it all, I’m passionate about Supporting Children, Young People and Families, and empowering staff and developing their skills and confidence so that they can make a difference in the lives of the people they support.

It goes without saying...
But I'll say it anyway

Children, Young People and Families deserve timely access to help and support to meet their needs.

People who choose to spend their time and energy supporting Children and Families are incredible people who want to make a difference.

There are big demands on those services and real pressure on those people trying to help.

We should give those people as much training, and support as we can.

You don't know what you don't know. There are no silly questions, and I won't judge.

About SCYPF

With a career spanning NHS CAMHS, local authority, and voluntary sector Children’s Services, Liam has seen firsthand the challenges faced by professionals. “We often hear about the struggles in children’s mental health services, but not enough about solutions,” he says.

The evidence-based training programme is delivered non-judgementally, Liam understands that some professionals come to work in Children's Services from other areas, or may be new to the workforce; "People who choose to spend their time supporting Children, Young People and Families are incredible people who want to make a difference". The training caters to various levels of experience and confidence, with staff able to book on to modules that will most suit them.

The training programme is based on Supporting Children Young People and Families CYPMHS Competency Framework (download here). It gives all professionals a strong foundation in working with children and families, developing key mental health understanding and skills, before advancing to specialised modules on working therapeutically with children and families affected by abuse and trauma, and in mental health crisis.

With one in three child psychiatry posts vacant (The Guardian 2024) and waiting times as long as two years (Children’s Commissioner for England, 2024), many services lack the capacity to train and retain staff effectively. SCYPF’s training helps bridge this gap, ensuring professionals feel supported and prepared to deliver high-quality care. “Better-trained staff provide better services,” Liam adds. “They’re also more likely to stay in their roles, boosting team morale and help with staff retention.”

Liam also lends his experience in Children’s Mental Health service management and commissioning, where he has achieved tangible improvements in outcomes, leading two services to reduce average waiting times from over 9 months, to less than 3, one of which received national recognition, as he provides bespoke guidance for system leaders seeking strategic improvements in children’s mental health services. I only recently left a role as Head of Children, Young People and Family Services. I know how much pressure services (and you as leaders) are under. I hope the resources, updates and information on this page and site are useful. If I can be of any help or support please do reach out. "It's good to talk."

Take care
Liam
